Sustained Investment in Innovation
Huawei's sustained investment in innovation is the cornerstone of our ongoing growth. Technological innovation and research are at the very heart of our company. We consistently invest at least 10% of our annual sales revenue in R&D, and for the past five years, even more than 20%. In 2025, our total R&D spending reached CNY192.3 billion, representing 21.8% of our total revenue. Our total R&D investment over the last decade now exceeds CNY1.38 trillion. Our global R&D investment has ranked among the top 6 on the EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard for nine consecutive years.
A Growing IP Portfolio
As of the end of 2025, Huawei owns more than 165,000 active patents worldwide. More than 55,000 of these active patents have been granted in China, making us China's top patent holder. Huawei also holds more than 30,000 granted patents in the U.S., and about 20,000 in Europe. Huawei has also remained the largest filer of PCT applications for nine consecutive years.

Following the ICT industry’s common practice of patent cross-licensing, over the past 20 years, Huawei has conducted extensive cross-licensing negotiations with key patent holders in the ICT industry and has signed more than 260 patent license agreements with major ICT companies across Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea.
Huawei’s own patent portfolio has grown continuously through the increasing R&D investment. By the end of 2025, the company has held a total of more than 165,000 active granted patents. These patents are not exclusive to Huawei, In fact, 55 Fortune Global 500 companies, including leading US tech giants, license a part of the patents by paying royalties to Huawei.

In 2011, Huawei filed a lawsuit against Motorola in the United States after being involved in an IP dispute with the company. The U.S. court ruled in favor of Huawei and issued a temporary injunction prohibiting Motorola from transferring Huawei's trade secrets in its possession. As part of the resolution of that lawsuit, Motorola paid Huawei a fee and obtained permission to transfer Huawei's confidential information to Nokia Siemens Networks as part of an existing M&A deal.
In 2010, Huawei filed a lawsuit against ZTE in Europe for patent and trademark infringement. In 2015, the European Court of Justice made a ruling that helped establish legal requirements for the licensing negotiations of standard essential patents (SEPs).

Huawei announced a batch of key inventions as part of its biennial "Top Ten Inventions" Awards at the " Broadening the Innovation Landscape 2022" forum held at its Shenzhen headquarters.
